An original oil painting of Revered Matthew Richey done by John Steven Cogdell. Painted on wood and housed in a gilded frame. Painting has some noted craquelure and paint loss seen throughout. On reverse inscription reads:

“Rev. M. Ritchie.

painted by his friend John Stevens Cogdell

presented to the Mother of the Preacher in 1831 & 1832”

...the rest of the inscription is hard to make out, including penscil text to lower left.

John Steven Cogdell was a lawyer who also served in the House of Representatives. He was a sculpture as well as a painter.
